James Warner Poetry Website Design

Bringing a Lifetime of Poetry Online

Custom Squarespace Website Design for a Canadian Poet

James Warner is a Canadian poet based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, whose work has appeared in literary journals in Canada and internationally. As he prepared to release new collections of poetry, he needed a website that reflected the quiet beauty and thoughtfulness of his writing while providing readers with an easy way to discover his work.

The goal wasn't simply to create a website—it was to build an online home that felt as timeless and intentional as the poetry itself.

Project Overview

For this project, I designed and launched a fully custom Squarespace website that introduces James to new readers while providing a foundation for future book releases.

The design emphasizes simplicity, generous white space, thoughtful typography, and carefully curated imagery that allows the poetry to remain the focal point. Every design decision was made to support the reading experience rather than distract from it.

The finished website includes:

  • Custom Squarespace website design

  • Responsive mobile optimization

  • Author biography page

  • Individual books section

  • Poetry showcase

  • Contact page

  • Search engine optimized page titles and descriptions

  • Clean navigation and user experience

  • Future-ready structure for additional books and publications

Website Design Goals

The website is designed to feel:

  • Quiet and reflective

  • Elegant without feeling overly designed

  • Easy to navigate

  • Accessible on desktop, tablet, and mobile

  • Built for long-term growth as new collections are released

Rather than relying on trends, the design focuses on timeless typography, balanced layouts, and meaningful imagery that complements James's work.

My Design Process

Every website begins with understanding the person behind the work.

For James Warner, that meant creating a digital space that respected the contemplative nature of poetry while remaining approachable for readers discovering his work for the first time.

Throughout the project I focused on:

  • Organizing content into a clear structure

  • Creating a clean visual hierarchy

  • Selecting typography suited to literary content

  • Optimizing each page for readability

  • Improving search engine visibility with SEO best practices

  • Ensuring a consistent experience across all devices

The result is a website that feels calm, intentional, and easy to explore.

SEO & Performance

Alongside the visual design, the website was optimized with foundational SEO best practices, including:

  • Optimized page titles

  • Meta descriptions

  • Heading hierarchy

  • Descriptive page URLs

  • Mobile responsiveness

These improvements help readers discover James's work through search while creating a better overall user experience.

The Result

The finished website provides James Warner with a professional online presence that reflects both his writing and his artistic voice.

It serves as a central place where readers can:

  • Learn more about the poet

  • Explore published and upcoming books

  • Read selected poems

  • Connect directly through the contact page

Most importantly, the website creates a lasting foundation that can continue to grow alongside future publications.
